Reading List

Supplemental Reading List

The papers for the supplemental reading assignments have been selected for a number of reasons, including being fairly approachable without substantial background knowledge and being relevant to what we are discussing in class. Some papers have been selected due to their relevance to the responsible computing component of the course, and are marked with the ⚖️ symbol. Up to three points earned for writing a response on or presenting those papers are counted as responsible computing points at the end of the semester. Papers marked with ❗ are recommended only if you have completed courses like machine learning, deep learning, or linear algebra.

This schedule is tentative! If we fall behind, topics and assignments may be moved to later weeks in the semester. Responses are due at 11:59PM, while presentations happen during our class period. Most responses/presentations are due the class period after we discuss the relevant topic to ensure that everyone has the background knowledge to understand them. However, for topics like ethics in NLP and language understanding, the presentations will happen alongside our class on the topic to serve as a jumping-off point for our in-class discussions.
