Participation Grades

Your participation grade (9%) is determined by the following components, each of which are described in detail below.

Component
Attendance 5%
Meet and Greet 2%
Introduction Survey 1%
Participation Survey 1%

Attendance

Attendance will be taken during lecture and lab periods. Attending a class involves arriving on time and staying until the end of class. I will note who is in attendance at different times during different class periods. If you leave the room during class, please come confirm with me at the end of class that your attendance was counted!

You are expected to attend 33 class and lab periods during the semester; your attendance grade will be the percentage of those classes that are attended. Note that midterm attendance does not count towards your attended classes.

You may use a free pass if you miss class or lab. Note that free passes are limited and can alternatively be used for revising homework assignments!

Meet and Greet

During the first two weeks of class, you’ll sign up for a 10-minute group meeting with me and a few of your classmates. Please come to the meeting prepared to share:

  • Your name (optional: pronouns)
  • Where you are from
  • What draws you to computer science
  • A non-academic interest (or at least a non-CS interest)

Surveys

The other part of your participation grade will be determined by the completion of various surveys (described in detail below). The following late policy will be applied to all surveys:

  • Up to 24 hours late: no penalty
  • 24 hours-3 days late: 10% penalty
  • 3-7 days late: 50% penalty
  • More than 7 days late: no credit

Introduction Survey

The introduction survey is given at the start of the semester to tell me a little bit about your background and interests.

Participation Survey

The participation survey will allow you to reflect on your participation in the class, and will be due on the last day of class.
